United States Now Has Most Total Coronavirus Cases in the World

Worldometers.Info: U.S. passes 85,000 Coronavirus Cases; More Than China, Italy


Shiawassee News photo now lists the United States as the country with the most total Coronavirus cases; 85,377 as of 9:20pm ET on Thursday March 26th 2020.  The website that tracks data globally clocks more than 17,000 cases in the U.S. in the previous 24 hour period; the most of which exist in New York, where there were mroe than 6,000 new cases.  Michigan is the U.S. state with the fifth highest number of cases, according to the site, more than 500 of which are new in the past 24 hour period.

Not only does the U.S. now have the most cases, the rate at which the U.S. is identifying cases is significantly more rapid than any other country.

Behind the U.S., Spain identified nearly 10,000 fewer new cases in the past 24 hour period, with 8,271 new cases in that country. says Germany tracked 6,615, Italy tracked 6,203, France tracked 3,922 and Iran rounds out the five countries with the most new Coronavirus cases with 2,389.

The site reports 531,799 worldwide, with 24,071 confirmed deaths.  That is a fatality rate of more than 4.5 percent.

There are now two confirmed cases in Shiawassee County.  One patient is reported to be in stable condition after being airlifted to U of M-Ann Arbor.  The other is self-isolating at home.

Art Van Furniture is suspending its liquidation sales due to the COVID-19. The Warren-based retailer said Thursday that it is following guidance by public health authorities. 

Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills and Twelve Oaks in Novi will close their doors through at least March 29th. The owner of both malls, Taubman Centers, is closing down nearly all of its malls nationwide. 

The Grand Rapids Children's Museum is helping kids stay busy at home during school closures. The museum is closed, but its online portal to fun and activities is open.

An aging bridge in Detroit over I-94 is closed for repairs until Sunday. The Cass Avenue bridge between West Palmer and Antoinette has been shut down by the Michigan Department of Transportation.  

Operations at Flint Assembly have stopped due to concerns over the coronavirus. Employees were told Flint Assembly operations wrapped up after second shift. Flint Assembly will be back to operation March 30th. 

Ferris State University is closing all residence halls on campus as it offers online classes to students during the coronavirus outbreak. Ferris will offer remote instruction through June 1. 

Michigan Congressman John Moolenaar is keeping busy during the coronavirus pandemic. He held a telephone town hall Thursday afternoon and says he’s worked on legislation to help the country and Michigan.
